I found much of the vocabulary in accounts of the disappeared ... This book grew out of the list of those words which, sadly, became a word-portrait of los 43. An artists' book. Bound accordion-fold and laid in a cloth covered chemise folio with title on spine. Housed in a red cloth-covered slipcase. ; Combining the traditional processes of papermaking, letterpress printing and bookbinding, Fission was written, printed and bound by Kate Barber in Tuscaloosa, Alabama during the 2013-2014 academic year. Work began in the Lost Arch Papermill where almost 400 sheets of 60% raw cotton/ 40% bleached abaca were made. Moving to the fifth floor studios of Gorgas Library, the sheets were printed on a Vandercook SP-4. The text is digitally set in 11 point Sang Bleu Sans Light. The imagery is created using a combination of linoleum and photopolymer plates--Colophon. ; Artist's statement: Tracing the interrelated co-evolution of earth and life, this project explores the connection between the enormity of the universe and the microscopic details of life. Three pamphlet insets explore the development of Earth, molecules, and life. They are structured to hide and reveal text and images, which allows the reading to unfold organically. The text continues onto the back of the accordion where it delves into humanity. The imagery is comprised of contrasting organic circles and graphic lines. These polar aesthetics work in tandem with the text and play off each other to create their own unique narrative--Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers, LLC website, viewed September 4, 2014. ; Thesis excerpt: When I originally settled on the accordion/pamphlet structure, I imagined two narratives. Not competing narratives, but rather two sides that could be read together or stand alone - one textual, one visual. So as I worked on the imagery, it was important to focus on developing a cohesive narrative that would both connect the front and back in a visual narrative loop and enhance the reading of the text. I took my visual and color inspiration from a variety of sources ranging from human and plant details and fossils to cosmic maps and cityscapes .... I poured over the internet for images that captured both the micro and macroscopic details of life, looking for the common threads and ways to simplify and unify ...--Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers, LLC website, viewed September 4, 2014. ; In an edition of 50.

"Gathering spaces is a one-of-a-kind artists' book which consists of collagraph and a slit concertina binding structure. The conceptual base is the creation of a contemplative space. The intent of the artist is for the viewer to reflect upon the act of gathering; formally as in the gathering of materials, paper and folds, and conceptually as in the gathering of communities." -Ann Kresge
