This Book of Remembrance has been made by The University of Rochester as a perpetual Memorial of the personal services and Gifts which made possible the development of the River Campus of the University and the dedication of the Old Campus to the use of the College for Women.
After the announcement, in 1920, of the gifts made by George Eastman and the General Education Board for Medical Education, the study of the problem of a site for the Medical School and Hospital revealed the inadequacy of the Old Campus for that purpose and the necessity for finding a more spacious site.
These facts led two citizens, not connected with the University in any way, George W. Todd and James S. Havens, to suggest, early in 1921, the importance of providing for whatever future development the University might be called to face, by choosing a site not only for the Medical buildings, but for a new and more adequate equipment for the College of Arts and Science, and the undertaking by these friends to conduct an active solicitation for the funds necessary to bring such a project to fulfillment.
After careful study of the whole problem, the Trustees of the University decided November 5th, 1921 to build the Medical School and Hospital on a tract of sixty acres located on Elmwood Avenue near the Genesee River. They also agreed
