Decades of Pride

LGBTQ+ identities have existed throughout history, despite facing societal prejudice and condemnation. While these identities have always been present, visibility and openness have increased significantly in the past five decades. LGBTQ+ people have often been silenced, overlooked, and forgotten. By actively documenting and celebrating these stories, we can pave the way for future generations to connect with their own histories. The following pages offer a glimpse into LGBTQ+ history at the University of Rochester in recent decades. Countless students have contributed to creating a more accepting university environment. On a college campus, many battles fought by students are soon forgotten due to the quick turnover of the student population. This timeline only captures a fraction of the rich LGBTQ+ community, with the following pages delving into some of the stories in greater detail.
