Galleries

This page features a glimpse further into the relevant University Archives content held at the Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation Department. These items can be useful in piecing together the LGBTQ+ history through event posters and written pieces among others.

These galleries show a sampling of materials relating to the following areas:

These posters are a glimpse into the events held on campus during the 1990s. The April Pride Week Posters and October History Month Posters list the events held. This includes the range of guests who came to speak at the university over the years. Most of the posters above are related to events sponsored by the LGBTQ+ group on campus, then called the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Friends Association. In the decades to come the group would continue to host such events alongside an increased amount of university or department hosted events relating to LGBTQ+ issues. There are more LGBTQ+ event posters throughout the RBSCP collection.

These posters are a glimpse into the events held on campus during the 2000s. Gay Pride Month, or Gaypril, was celebrated in April each year and Gay History Month in October. The group name changed from the GLBFA to Pride Network in 2002 which can be seen from the club name on posters for events they sponsored. There are more LGBTQ+ event posters throughout the RBSCP collection.

Notable Campus Times Articles

These are just a few articles from the Campus Times relating to LGBTQ+ issues. In the research for this project, nearly 1000 relevant articles or mentions were found. Beyond that, there are countless others to be found in the vast collection of student written pieces over the decades. Some search terms are easier than others in researching LGBTQ+ history. "Homosexual" is more likely to find relevant results than "gay" due to the myriad of names including the letters "gay" and the alternative definitions of the word. "Lesbian" and "Bisexual" are good places to start, especially with the University group names often including these labels. Another route for searches in the Campus Times is looking at the group names and acronyms- sometimes an article or event listing would write "GLF" or "GAU" rather than the full group names, Gay Liberation Front and Gay Academic Union respectively. Finally, in researching transgender history before the 2000s, it is useful to search both  "transexual" and "transsexual" as the spelling was debated. Beyond this, "transvestite" will yield some transgender and drag histories.
