Clip of the University of Rochester Men's Glee Club performing "Salvation Cometh to Our God" and "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child" on the Ed Sullivan Show. Video begins with a Kodak commercial and two performances--Charles K.L. Davis with "Ave Maria" and Mahalia Jackson singing "I Found the Answer"--before the Glee Club takes the stage about 10 minutes into the video.
The Men's Glee Club was established in 1876 and often travelled in the region to perform. In this silent film from 1929, the group heads to Chicago and can be seen outside the landmark Field Museum. They performed in Oak Park and also at the Woodward Avenue Presbyterian Church in Detroit. They returned via Buffalo, and stayed at the Hotel Statler.
Don W. Lyon joined the University's Communications staff in 1952. Lyon brought the University's people and research to the community via radio and television. This edition of the biweekly program "University Open House," featured Edward Gibson '59, a member of the Skylab 3 crew, who had just returned from 84 days orbiting the earth. At the time, it set the record for the longest mission in space. Rochester was the first stop for Gibson after his return from space, and got a hero's welcome from the University.
As part of the Viewpoint series of interviews with University of Rochester faculty, staff, and students, Don Lyon interviewed Assistant Professor Naomi Chamberlain regarding her work on improving the accessibility of existing and future buildings in Rochester, and her work leading the creation of a publication which surveyed building accessibility to be distributed to residents and visitors
